Inquiry after York rugby player left critically ill
An investigation is under way after a rugby union player was left critically ill following an altercation during a match.
The incident happened at a game between York Railway Institute and Doncaster Thornesians on Saturday afternoon.
Police said an altercation took place on the pitch just before half time resulting in a York player, 30-year-old Tuui Radrava, being seriously injured.
Detectives are asking witnesses and match spectators to contact them.
Det Insp David Ellis said the incident happened at the York club's pitch on New Lane at about 1600 BST.
The player is being treated at Leeds General Infirmary.
Mr Ellis said: "It is believed that there were a number of witnesses to the incident and I would ask them to get in touch."
York Railway Institute officials who were at the match said they did not want to comment during the police investigation.
