Man, 23, dies after A1 collision in North Yorkshire

A 23-year-old man has died after a collision with a van on the A1 in North Yorkshire.

It happened between junctions 48 and 47 on the southbound carriageway at about 1500 BST on Thursday.

The man, from Thirsk, who had been driving a Suzuki Swift, was taken by air ambulance to Leeds General Infirmary with critical injuries.

He was pronounced dead on Sunday. The driver of a Mercedes van was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Police said the 32-year-old man appeared at Harrogate Magistrates' Court on Saturday and was remanded in custody while inquiries continue.

A 34-year-old man from Manchester, who was a rear seat passenger in the Suzuki was also taken to Leeds General Infirmary where he was treated before being released.

A 21-year-old woman and a seven month old baby were taken to Harrogate District Hospital where they were treated before being released.

All of the injured people were in the Suzuki Swift.

Police are appealing for witnesses.
