Honda's "self-sufficient" hydrogen refuelling station has officially opened at the company's Swindon plant.

The company said it was the UK's first commercial-scale solar-powered hydrogen production and refuelling facility.

Since October 2011 the site has relied on bottled gas bought in but now uses solar panels.

Swindon Borough Council which part-funded the complex, is trialling five hydrogen and diesel vehicles with the company.

Earlier this month, the government pledged £3.5m - to be matched by the industry - for up to seven new hydrogen refuelling stations.
