Teenager arrested after making hoax 999 calls

A 15-year-old girl has been arrested after making 30 bogus 999 calls to Wiltshire Police.

The teenager, from Westbury, who cannot be named because of her age, was arrested on Tuesday.

A police spokesman said most of her calls to the control room had contained abusive and threatening language.

John Flyn, from Wiltshire Police, said: "While this individual was calling us, we had a genuine emergency call - thankfully we managed to deal with it."

On average, Wiltshire Police deal with about 250 emergency 999 calls a day, but only a handful relate to a genuine emergency.

"The time wasted on dealing with hoax calls can mean the difference between life and death for people genuinely trying to contact us," Supt Gavin Williams said.

"We will always seek to apprehend those people who participate in hoax calls and bring them to justice."
