Wiltshire's Police and Crime Panel has approved the appointment of Patrick Geenty as chief constable of the county.

On Tuesday, Wiltshire police and crime commissioner (PCC), Angus Macpherson named Mr Geenty as his choice.

The panel has the power to veto the PCC's preferred choice and it is also responsible for reviewing the PCC's police and crime plan.

Mr Geenty won unanimous backing from the panel which held a hearing earlier.

The hearing involved Mr Geenty answering detailed questions from the panel about his "professional competence and personal independence".

Conservative PCC, Mr Macpherson has welcomed the decision.

The panel will next meet on 6 February to work on the forthcoming police and crime plan.
