Swindon's 2012 half Marathon saved

The Swindon Half Marathon will go ahead this year after its main sponsor decided to continue backing it.

The event was under threat after Nationwide Building Society pulled out but it has since agreed to back the run which takes place on 14 October.

Organisers say the event could be moved to a different part of town to enable it to continue and cut costs.

Councillor Keith Williams said road closures and putting up barriers was costing £25,000.

He said organisers may need to find an off-road area to hold the event.

"We're not like Bristol, we're not like Bath where they have tens of thousands of runners.

"We've got to have a marathon that suits our needs, suits the needs of the runners, the people in Swindon, the people that support us year in, year out."
