Wiltshire Police renew plan to combat scrap metal theft

Wiltshire Police are renewing their commitment to combat scrap metal theft in the county.

Metal theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the UK, and Wiltshire Police have recorded a number of opportunistic crimes locally.

Most commonly, lead, copper pipes and cables are stolen.

Under the Operation Herald initiative, police will share information with the Environment Agency and Wiltshire Council in order to catch offenders.

Sgt Dave Hobman, who is leading the initiative said: 'We can all help reduce the number of victims to this type of offence by being vigilant regarding people taking an interest in metals around our homes, at our schools, at places of worship and where we work and reporting suspicious behaviour.

"It is also important to review current security measures and if necessary take preventative action."
