The bakery firm Greggs is to create up to 300 jobs by building a factory in Wiltshire.

The company has been granted planning permission to build on a five-and-a-half acre site near the Holiday Inn, at Solstice Park, in Amesbury.

Their nine shops in Wiltshire are currently supplied by factories in the south east, Birmingham and south Wales.

Dave Dash from the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union said news of the jobs was "very welcome".

"In this [economic] environment it is good to see the company progressing and growing in the south west," Mr Dash said.

The new factory is part of plans to open up to 250 shops in the south west over the next few years.

It would operate around-the-clock for six-and-a-half days a week, with two deliveries leaving the site each day.

Greggs says it hopes the new building will be completed within two years.

The planning application was supported by Wiltshire's economic development team and Amesbury Town Council.
