Warning over Wiltshire council tax scam

People in Wiltshire are being warned of a scam that claims householders are entitled to a council tax rebate.

A council spokesman said it begins with a phone call informing the resident they can get a rebate. The caller asks for their bank details.

Sue Wilkin, from Trading Standards, said the council always communicated about important subjects by letter.

She said staff would not call in such a way or ask for bank details over the phone.

Anyone who thinks they have fallen victim to the scam is asked to call Consumer Direct for advice on 08454 040506.
