A man has been arrested after about eight vehicles were damaged in a supermarket car park, leaving what shoppers called "a scene of chaos".

The incident happened at Sainsbury's in Melksham, just before midday on Saturday.

Police said the 19-year-old man was held on suspicion of causing criminal damage. He was later bailed.

Two people were taken to the Royal United Hospital Bath as a precaution and another person had a panic attack.

Susan Dewfall, who witnessed the aftermath of the damage, said: "We were met by this scene of chaos.

"Six to eight cars appeared to have been shunted over the general area of the car park.

"Firemen had scattered sand everywhere because I guess it was some sort of fire risk.

"The people there looked fairly stunned. Some of them were wandering around their cars, they'd come out of the store and seen their cars just smashed."

A Sainsbury's spokesman said: "An incident occurred on Saturday in the car park of our Melksham store and we are currently assisting the authorities in their investigation."
