The former mayor of a Wiltshire town who sexually assaulted a six-year-old girl has been found dead.

Tim Abbott had admitted indecently assaulting a child in the 1980s and had been due to appear at Winchester Crown Court earlier.

Abbott, 55, was mayor of Wilton in 1995 and 1996. Officers were called to a report of a sudden death at about 1930 BST on Monday.

Police said they were not treating the death as suspicious.

Abbott, of Race Plane Road, Wilton, was last week charged with a further eight counts of indecent assault, one of sexual assault and a drug offence.

At an earlier hearing at Salisbury Crown Court, Abbott pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting a child under 13.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said a 55-year-old man had been found dead at an address in Wilton.

He added: "A post-mortem examination will take place, and a full file will be prepared for HM Coroner for Swindon and Wiltshire."
