County Durham stab murder accused remanded

A man has appeared in court charged with murdering a classroom assistant who was found with stab wounds on a path outside her County Durham home.

Gillian Raine, 53, was attacked outside her home in Coleridge Gardens, Dipton, near Consett, on Monday morning.

Gary Thompson, 24, of Moorland View, Castleside, Consett, appeared at Peterlee Magistrates' Court on Wednesday for a brief hearing.

He was remanded until a further hearing at Newcastle Crown Court on Thursday.

There was no application for bail.
