County Durham murder victim died of stab wounds

A 53-year-old woman who died following an attack in County Durham was stabbed, a post-mortem examination has revealed.

Gillian Raine was found on the path outside an address in Coleridge Gardens, Dipton, near Consett on Monday with serious head and neck injuries.

The classroom assistant was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, but died a short time later.

Detectives are continuing to question a 24-year-old local man arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police described the incident, which happened at about 0700 GMT, as a "sustained assault".

The area was cordoned off and a number of "possible weapons" were later recovered.

A Durham Police spokeswoman said that a number of people had been interviewed, and appealed for any witnesses who were in the area at the time but had not come forward to do so.
