A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a woman in County Durham.

Police found 53-year-old Gillian Raine on the path outside an address in Coleridge Gardens, Dipton, on Monday with serious head and neck injuries.

She was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham, but died a short time later.

Police cordoned off the area and a spokeswoman said that a number of "possible weapons" had been recovered.

A post-mortem examination was due to be carried out later.

Det Ch Insp Paul Goundry, of Durham Police, said: "This was a sustained assault in a public place.

"We're speaking to some significant witnesses and carrying out extensive inquiries to establish the full circumstances leading up to this attack."
