Gas fear families evacuated from Houghton homes return

Families on Wearside have returned to their homes after 32 hours, following fears of a gas explosion.

An exclusion zone was set up around Byron Terrace, Houghton-le-Spring, after a fire in a shed containing a gas cylinder.

Those evacuated in the early hours of Wednesday morning spent the night in a nearby sports hall.

Experts were called in to remove the gas cylinder and people returned to their homes on Thursday.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
