A man has died following an alleged assault at a Gateshead flat.

Police were called to reports of a number of people trying to force entry to an address on Eslington Court at about 02:40 GMT on Friday.

Michael Malloy, 40, later reported feeling unwell and collapsed and died in hospital.

Three men, aged 39, 37 and 20, were arrested at the scene on suspicion of burglary. A 39 year-old woman has also been arrested.

Police said a post-mortem examination had established that the man did not die as a result of assault injuries, although the results of toxicology reports are still awaited.

A Northumbria force spokesman said the incident was being treated as an "aggravated burglary".

He said: "We have been supporting the family of the man who passed away and it continues to be a difficult time for them.

"A post-mortem has established that he has not died as a result of the assault and so we won't be launching a homicide investigation.

"We believe the offenders and the victims are known to one another.

"This has not been a random attack but inquiries are still ongoing to establish exactly what has happened and why."
