Newcastle Jobcentre hostages 'fake bomb' suspect in court

A man has appeared in court charged in connection with an armed stand-off at a Jobcentre.

A man with a knife, wearing a fake explosive device, held several staff hostage at the centre in Byker, Newcastle on Friday morning.

Maxwell Scott Brennan has been charged with false imprisonment, communicating a bomb hoax and possessing a knife.

The 28-year-old, of Shipley Walk, has been remanded in custody to appear at Newcastle Crown Court in July.

Nobody was harmed in the incident, though local roads and the nearby Metro station were closed.

Buildings in the vicinity were also evacuated.

Bomb disposal experts searched the building and other properties in the area.
