A man who was killed when he was struck by a car in South Shields has been named by police.

Lewis Knapp was hit by a silver Vauxhall Vectra at 04:30 BST on Saturday as he crossed Anderson Street near the junction with Beach Road.

The 20-year-old, of Boldon Colliery, died at the scene.

Northumbria Police said a 20-year-old man arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in relation to the crash had been released on bail.
