A pedestrian has died in hospital two days after being struck by a car.

Jason Stephenson, 26, from New Brancepeth, County Durham, was hit by a Ford Focus as he walked along the A690 near Belmont, Durham City, at about 23:30 GMT on Friday.

He died at Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary on Sunday having suffered serious head injuries in the crash.

His sister Nicola said he was a "beloved brother" who was "tragically taken from us too soon".

The driver of the Focus, a 29-year-old man from Durham City, was treated for shock at the scene and his passenger, a 25-year-old woman from Consett, was uninjured.

Mr Stephenson, a porter at The Ramside Hotel near Durham City, also leaves a girlfriend, Tina.

Durham Police are appealing for witnesses.
