A man has died after falling on a ship in the North Sea.

A Coastguard helicopter was sent to the large vessel, the Brasschaat, a mile and a half (2.4km) off Tynemouth, North Tyneside, following the incident at about 14:30 BST on Thursday.

It is one of three vessels which have been moored off Tynemouth since July after the firm owning them went bust.

Police said it appeared the Ukrainian man fell from a height on to the ship's deck.

An investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances of his death.

The young seaman's family have been informed.

Several crew members were later brought to shore by a coastguard helicopter.
