A 15-year-old girl was raped close to a city centre car park in Sunderland, police have said.

The attack happened at about 22:00 GMT on Saturday on a grassed area in St Mary's Way, close to one of the city's largest multi-storey car parks.

Northumbria Police said the attacker was described as a white male in his 30s, of thin build and about 5ft 8ins tall. He spoke with a local accent.

Police are studying CCTV images from the area and appealed for witnesses.
