Track work to close North Tyneside Metro for 30 days
The Metro service in North Tyneside is to be halted for a total of 30 days to replace 50-year-old tracks.
Operator Nexus said the work would be carried out in two-stages shutting the line between Tynemouth and Shiremoor.
Director of rail Raymond Johnstone said the work to replace 8.7km (5.4 miles) of track was vital and a "once in a generation" occurrence.
The first 15-day closure begins on 19 March and a replacement bus service will be in operation.
The second line closure will be from 23 July to 6 August.
Mr Johnstone said: "It is a once in a generation piece of work to ensure Metro is here for many decades to come.
"The work can only be done by closing lines. We will also be working over a number of weekends and at night when Metro is not running."
Nexus has sent letters to more than 3,000 households in North Tyneside to make residents aware of the forthcoming works.
