An overturned lorry forced the closure of a major Tyneside road.

Newcastle's Central Motorway East was shut in both directions, with diesel spilled across several carriageways.

The incident happened just after 02:00 GMT between the Great North Road and Cow Hill junctions, Northumbria Police said.

The road reopened shortly after 08:00 GMT, but Newcastle City Council later announced it was closing lane two with immediate effect for "urgent repairs".

"Essential work" to the damaged cable barrier is expected to take 48 hours, the local authority added.

The incident caused severe delays.

The vehicle was travelling northbound from the A1058 on to the A167.

The driver was taken to hospital but was not believed to be seriously injured. The cause of the crash is not yet known.
