A teenager has been jailed for raping a woman in a Newcastle park and sexually assaulting another on the same night.

Bobby Joe Barclay, 18, will spend seven years and three months in jail with a further six years on extended licence.

Barclay, of Edgeware Road, Gateshead, attacked the 25-year-old woman as she walked through Exhibition Park in the early hours of 24 June.

He was sentenced at Newcastle Crown Court after admitting rape and sexually assault.

Barclay, who also admitted two robberies, was also made subject to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and must sign the sex offenders' register for life.

Speaking after sentencing, acting Det Sgt Dave Croskery, said: "Stranger attacks like this are not common here and just shows Barclay as the utterly abhorrent offender he is."
