Two violent prisoners who escaped from jail in South Yorkshire are believed to have returned to Tyneside, said police.

Barry Lynn, 35, from the Scotswood area of Newcastle, and Michael Forster, 41, from Gateshead, went missing from Hatfield Prison on Wednesday.

Both were serving sentences for violent crimes.

A vehicle they are believed to have been using has been found and a man and woman, both 37, arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender.

Northumbria Police said: "We think the two men are most likely to be in Newcastle or Gateshead and we have officers in both of those areas tasked with looking for them and arresting them.

"Both men were serving sentences for violent crimes and although there is nothing to suggest they are a risk to the public we would still ask people not to approach them and ring police straight away."
