A man has been jailed for life after admitting the murder of his former partner.

Michelle Jane Grey, 42, from the Bensham area of Gateshead, was found strangled at an address in Hillfield Street on 19 December 2014.

Carl Anderson, 41, of Hillfield Street, pleaded guilty at a previous Newcastle Crown Court hearing.

Judge John Milford told him he would serve a minimum of 12 and a half years in prison.

The court heard Anderson killed Ms Grey after an argument and a "violent struggle".

He fled after the attack but was arrested after police traced him to the Leeds area.

After the hearing, Det Ch Insp John Bent of Northumbria Police said: "This was a brutal and cold blooded murder of his ex-partner. A murder which had a devastating impact on her family.

"Anderson showed no remorse and fled the area to avoid arrest.

"The life sentence provides some justice to Michelle's family and fits the crime for which he has been convicted."
