A doorman has been shot outside a busy city centre nightclub by an assailant on a motorbike, police have said.

The 24-year-old was injured as he stood at the door of Tup Tup Palace in St Nicholas Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, just after 22:30 BST on Saturday.

Northumbria Police said the extent of the victim's injuries are not yet known.

A cordon was put in place and extra officers were drafted into the area, which was busy at the time.

Supt Chris Sharman said: "We know incidents like this cause concern and I would like to reassure the public that we are doing everything we can to trace the person responsible for this incident.

"If anyone has any information we would urge them to come forward and speak to us."

Extra officers had already been drafted in after a 19-year-old man was stabbed in the popular Old Eldon Square shopping area just after 18:00 BST.

He is in a stable condition in Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary and a 17-year-old man is being held on suspicion of wounding with intent, police confirmed.

Officers have now taken down the cordon around Tup Tup Palace.

The club, which opened in 2007, bills itself on its website as one of the city's premier nightspots.

Its celebrity guests have included Kanye West, Ed Sheeran and Olly Murs.
