Hamilton Place bomb alert: Terrorism 'ruled out'
A bomb scare during which residents had to spend the night away from their homes is not being linked to terrorist activity, police have confirmed.
Homemade explosives were discovered in a house in Hamilton Place, Newcastle, on Monday.
Police said a firearm and ammunition were also found and that a "serious incident" had been prevented.
An 18-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of making explosives with intent to endanger life.
About 50 people were evacuated from nearby properties as a precaution.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said whoever was responsible was working alone.
A bomb disposal team was called to the housing estate and later returned to Catterick Garrison.
