Man charged after Northumbria Police reopen 54 'no crime' rape cases

A man has been charged with rape after a North East police force reopened more than 150 cases.

The 43-year-old has been charged with one count of rape and three counts of assault, Northumbria Police said.

The force is re-examining 54 out of 153 rape inquiries which were dropped since October 2011 after being classed as "no crimes".

The man is due to appear before South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court on Saturday.

Alleged victims are being contacted and 48 officers who carried out initial investigations have been told their cases have been reopened.
