East Rainton crash kills 81-year-old woman

A woman has been killed in a crash in Sunderland.

Two cars collided on the A690 at East Rainton, Houghton-le-Spring at 12:10 BST.

The driver of one of the cars, an 81-year-old woman, was taken to the University Hospital of North Durham where she was pronounced dead.

The other driver was not injured, Northumbria Police said. The road was closed for three hours.
