A man who died after jumping into the sea in North Tyneside has been named.

Paul Fairley, 46, of Queen Street in North Shields, got into difficulty in the water near Fish Quay in the town on Saturday afternoon.

He was helped out of the water by members of the public, but was pronounced dead after being taken to hospital.

Northumbria Police said they did not believe anyone else was involved in his death.

The force has warned people of the dangers of open water, saying it can be "extremely deceiving".

A full inquest is due to be held on 4 September.
