A man has died after jumping into the sea in North Tyneside.

It is believed he got into difficulty after entering the water at North Shields Fish Quay at about 17:30 BST on Saturday.

The man, in his 40s, was pulled from the water by members of the public. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Northumbria Police has warned open water can be "extremely deceiving" and has urged people to stay safe.

Police believe there was no third party involvement in the man's death.
