Lumiere light festival brings £5.8m boost to Durham

Durham's Lumiere festival of light gave a boost to the area's economy of £5.8m, a report has concluded.

The event, which was held over four nights in November, featured 27 light installations beamed on to buildings, including the city's Norman cathedral.

Durham County Council said it attracted 175,000 visitors and 20,000 overnight stays in hotels and guest houses.

The authority is planning to invest £500,000 in securing what it described as its "signature event" for 2015.
