Man dies after sea rescue off South Shields

A man has died after being rescued from the sea off the coast of South Shields.

The 36-year-old, who has not yet been named, was reported as being in difficulty in the water at Marsden Grotto on Sunday afternoon.

He was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary by an RAF helicopter with serious injuries, but was later pronounced dead.

Northumbria Police said an investigation into the incident was ongoing.
