Police have urged people to "think about what they are doing" after a girl suffered facial injuries when a bottle was thrown at a car.

The beer bottle shattered the front passenger window when it was hurled at the car on the A693 in Stanley on Friday night.

Abbie Keers, nine, was treated in hospital for serious facial injuries.

Police said her family was shocked and warned that throwing anything on to a road could have serious consequences.

Officers believe the bottle could have been thrown from an underpass. The nine-year-old was showered with glass.

Durham Police Acting Ch Insp Karen Naunton said: "Whether this has been done on purpose or has been a mindless act, people need to think about what they are doing and the consequences of what they are doing.

"Throwing anything into a carriageway can have serious consequences."

Police appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
