Gateshead Council's cabinet backs smoke-free parks plan

Plans for a voluntary code encouraging adults not to smoke in children's play parks have moved a step closer.

Gateshead Council's cabinet has backed the proposal which it is hoped will help to deter youngsters from taking up the habit.

Rates of smoking among Gateshead children are higher than the national average, the council said.

Signs will go up in parks around the borough if the suggestion gets full approval next month.
