Man killed on A1(M) in County Durham 'ran on motorway'

A man killed on a motorway in County Durham had earlier been spotted running on the hard shoulder and main carriageway, police have revealed.

Several motorists reported the pedestrian on the A1(M) southbound between the Chester-le-Street and Durham junctions on Monday evening.

Mark Bambrick, 36, from Jesmond, Newcastle, was struck by a lorry and pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed for four hours following the incident at 07:00 GMT.

Before this, the Highways Agency attended reports of a broken down vehicle on the southbound carriageway, in an unconnected incident.

As officers arrived they saw a man appear from the side of the road, run across the carriageway and cross the central reservation to the northbound side.
