Whitley Bay care home lift fall death jury out

A jury has retired to consider a verdict in the case of an engineer accused of breaching health and safety regulations after a lift fall death.

Elizabeth Young, 92, died after falling 10ft (3m) into the lift-shaft, at the Heathdale Rest Home, in North Tyneside.

The court heard the accident, in September 2010, happened when the lift was disconnected awaiting spare parts.

Paul Thompson, of Denton Burn, Newcastle, and Derwent Lift Services Ltd deny health and safety charges.

During the trial, the prosecution told the court Mr Thompson was "highly experienced" but had failed to lock the lift at the home in Whitley Bay and that necessary safety checks would have taken seconds to carry out.

However, Mr Thompson said he did not go up to the second floor where Mrs Young lived, because he had "no need to", since the lift doors could not be opened without a key.
