Tyne and Wear carers to get £1.4m to support short breaks

Carers living in Sunderland, Gateshead and South Tyneside are to receive more than £1.4m from the government.

The NHS South of Tyne and Wear money will fund carers' short breaks, an initiative recognising them as fundamental to strong families and stable communities.

Sunderland Teaching PCT will get £630,000; £440,000 for Gateshead PCT and £350,000 for South Tyneside PCT.

Support will be tailored to individual carers' needs, it is claimed.

Penny Davison, from NHS South of Tyne and Wear, said: "Carers are often hidden and isolated from their communities and they often don't see themselves as carers but simply looking after a family member or a loved one.

"This investment is funding initiatives to provide a wide range of services to support them including gym membership, cinema trips and holistic therapies."
