Premier League footballer Nile Ranger has been bailed after being held over an assault that left a man unconscious.

The 33-year-old victim was found outside Cosy Joes Pub, in the Groat Market in Newcastle, early on Saturday.

During Mr Ranger's arrest after a search of the area, two police officers suffered minor cuts, Northumbria Police has confirmed.

Mr Ranger was bailed on Saturday evening. The victim suffered swelling and bruising to the face.

It was originally thought he had suffered a broken jaw.

Mr Ranger, from London, moved to Newcastle in July 2008 following his release by Southampton.
