Police have arrested two teenagers after a man was injured in a shooting in Newcastle.

Few details about the incident, which happened at Newarth Close in the Lemington area of the city in the early hours, have been released.

The 40-year-old was taken to hospital, where his condition is described as non-life threatening.

Two 17-year-old boys were arrested on suspicion of assault. Police have appealed for witnesses.

A Northumbria Police spokesman said: "I'd like to reassure residents this is believed to be an isolated incident and we don't believe it to be a random attack.

"Incidents like this involving firearms don't happen very often in Newcastle or the force and we're doing everything possible to piece together what has happened."
