Woman recovering after sex attack in Newcastle

A 19-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Newcastle as she walked home in the early hours of Saturday.

The victim was approached by a man aged about 25 in Rowantree Road in the Byker area of the city.

Northumbria Police said the woman was left "incredibly shaken" but was not seriously hurt.

A spokeswoman said the woman's attacker was 6ft 3in tall, of Afro-Caribbean appearance and spoke with what was thought to be a London accent.

'Horrible ordeal'

Det Con Anthony James said the woman's attacker began speaking to her before carrying out the sexual assault and leaving the scene.

"The teenager has been left incredibly shaken but not seriously injured as a result of the attack," he said.

"The man was wearing a pink or light top, a jacket and dark pants.

"This was a horrible ordeal for the woman involved and we are doing all we can to locate this offender."

Mr James appealed for witnesses to come forward.
