Northumberland drivers warned of black ice

Black ice is continuing to cause problems for drivers in Northumberland after dozens of crashes.

On Friday night, there were at least a 12 separate accidents on the A1 and the A697 caused by ice and snow.

On Saturday, Northumbria Police said a number of cars had skidded or become stuck because of wintry conditions in east and west Tynedale.

A police spokesman urged drivers to take extra care and try and stay on main routes if possible.

The spokesman said: "Motorists are advised that all roads are potentially hazardous in these sorts of conditions and that they should be aware of black ice."
