Stones thrown at moving traffic in Newcastle

Police have warned that lives have been put at risk by youths throwing stones at moving traffic in Newcastle.

Over the past week there have been five incidents where the windows of buses or cars in the Westerhope and Denton areas have been smashed.

In one case, a woman needed surgery to remove glass fragments from her eye.

Patrols and covert activities are being carried out in the affected areas, to cut offences and catch offenders in the act.

A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said: "These youngsters may see this as a prank but it's completely irresponsible and dangerous.

"Those involved need to think carefully about the consequences of their actions."
