Man's death in Newcastle blamed on fall

A 20-year-old man found near a bridge in Newcastle had died as the result of a fall, police said.

Daniel Sweeney, from County Mayo, Ireland, died in hospital after being found injured in Westgate Road near the High Level Bridge on Tuesday.

Detectives initially suspected the man had been attacked and closed several roads surrounding the scene.

But a post mortem examination showed his injuries to be the result of a fall, Northumbria Police said.

Det Chief Insp Paul Young said: "This appears to have been a tragic incident which has resulted in the death of a young man.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with his family at this terrible time."
