A new mall - part of a £170m redevelopment of Newcastle's Eldon Square shopping centre - has been officially opened.

St Andrew's Way houses dozens of well-known high street names including Debenhams, Top Shop, Burton, Miss Selfridge and Schuh.

His Royal Highness Prince Richard, the Duke of Gloucester, officially opened the centre on Monday.

Eldon Square opened in 1976 and has been extended over the past five years.

The building has been created from 30,000 tonnes of broken-down concrete and brickwork and developed with a green roof.

The multi-million pound programme has been a joint partnership between Capital Shopping Centres PLC and Newcastle City Council.

Old Eldon Square was re-landscaped with new grass, flower beds, trees and shrubberies and completed in August 2008.
