Police scheme targets Tyneside shoplifters

Shoplifting offences in a North Tyneside town have reduced as a result of a scheme launched by police to target the problem.

Northumbria Police made 12 arrests last month as a result of the Whitley Bay Shop Watch campaign.

Reports of incidents fell from 30 in June 2009 to 25 in June 2010, police have said.

During the campaign officers increased patrols in the town centre during busy retail periods.
