A bus driver accused of causing the death of a great-grandmother in a crash blamed it on a mechanical failure.

Eileen Brennan, 82, died and another pedestrian was hurt when a bus crashed into a bank in Darlington on 7 July.

Michael Gilbert, 52, denied causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving at a hearing at Teesside Crown Court.

Christopher Knox, defending, said his client "believes that there was a mechanical failure".

A four-day trial was listed for 29 August and the defendant, from Middleton-St-George, was granted bail.
