Robber with meat cleaver ties up Bishop Auckland couple
A robber wielding a meat cleaver broke into a couple's home in County Durham and tied them up, police said.
The house in Durham Road, Bishop Auckland, was targeted in the early hours of Tuesday when a man smashed his way in through a downstairs window.
He tied up the couple - a man in his 60s and a woman in her 50s - before fleeing with cash, shoes and clothes.
He also took the couple's Audi 1 car. A 38-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the robbery.
Durham Police said the couple's teenage children were in the house at the time but were unharmed.
A short time later, the Audi was found abandoned after a crash near to the Bertie clothing store in Bishop Auckland.
Officers said there had been an attempted break-in at the store and the window was smashed.
Detectives believe it is linked to the burglary on Durham Road.
Det Insp Paul Phillips, of the force, said: "This was an extremely distressing incident for the victims who have been left shaken but thankfully uninjured."
