Woman dies after car hits telegraph pole

An elderly woman has died after her car collided with a telegraph pole in a County Durham village.

The 82-year-old's Citroen C3 was travelling along the B6299 in Stanley Crook at about 10:30 GMT, near an area known locally as Billy Row bank.

She was given first aid at the scene and the air ambulance service was called, but she was confirmed dead shortly after.

The woman had been travelling alone, a spokesman for Durham Police said.
